A story of how an entire community came together to help a family plant a Christmas tree farm, which gives back to all the families in the community every Christmas, and every day.
A struggling local conservation organization first came to RL | A, in order to bring awareness to the plight of farmers transitioning from commodity agriculture toward a sustainable future. The group hoped somehow to generate seed funds to make their goals happen.
The locals conveyed a heart rending story of individual families struggling through much of the past century to continually generate cash crops. Even the spirited heritage force of grit and grace seemed destined for peril as land began to be bought out for housing—what the locals call a farm casualty—threatening to tear the community apart.
Created for the MAC Museum of Arts and Culture, Sequin/Dungeness, WA.
Saving farms and community
Harvest Dreams raised awareness that not only land would be at risk, but the very community fabric would be at risk too.
The film’s story helped raise money for conservation and preservation, and saved several farms portrayed in the film, so that they might continue as agricultural producers in a new era of organic and sustainable farming.
Now several farms like the Lazy J are thriving, and have even spun off successful retail and local events.
